Staples Announces In-Store 3-D Printing Service

A new service called “Staples Easy 3D” will allow customers to upload their designs to Staples’ website, then pick up the printed objects at their local office supply megastore, or have them shipped to their home or business — not unlike the photo- and document-printing service the company already offers.

The project was announced today at Euromold 2012 by 3-D printer manufacturer Mcor Technologies, who is partnering with Staples to provide its new Iris printers for the service.

The Iris printers employ an innovative method to generate objects, using reams of paper that are cut and printed while being stacked and glued together. This technique allows for a high-resolution layer thickness of 100 microns, similar to that of the MakerBot Replicator 2, but not quite as fine as the 25-micron capability of the Form 1.


The new printers also incorporate the ability to add photorealistic coloring — something that more common plastic printers can’t yet achieve. But while the glued paper is said to have a wood-like hardness, the arrangement of the layered paper grain will require special consideration for certain design layouts (this can affect other types of 3-D printers as well). And while the company says it is able to be drilled, tapped or screwed, its material properties are unknown compared to traditional materials like real wood or steel.
Still, the move by an established corporation to offer 3-D printing further legitimizes the adoption of the rapidly growing field by the mass market. Similar services currently exist, being offered by companies like Shapeways and Sculpteo, but this is the first to be made available from a chain retailer.

Staples Easy 3D will launch in the Netherlands and Belgium in the first quarter of 2013, and will be rolled out to other countries shortly afterword. No word yet on pricing or when it will reach the United States."

ja das schaut schon gut aus. Und was soll das Teil kosten?
Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen das dieses Gerät in der Preisregion vom MakerBot 2 liegt.
Was allerdings interessant ist, und ich mir die Tage mal etwas genauer angeschaut habe ist der
Form 1. Der soll glaube ich im April 2013 rauskommen. Liegt bei knapp 2.400 Euro und kommt aus Amerika.
Hinzu muss man dann aber noch die 19 % von unserem Zoll rechnen. Und die Frage bleibt: Kommt das Teil
überhaupt heil an? Da ich des öfteren Sachen aus Amerika ordere, kann ich sagen: Nein, nicht immer. MakerBot hat
nen deutschen Vertrieb. Und noch eines: Ich glaube in Amerika haben die 110 V, und nicht wie bei uns 220 V. Oder?

Ich glaube, dass Konzept ist eher, einen Druckservice in den einzelnen Staplesfilialen anzubieten.
Das Gerät werden die wohl erstmal nicht verkaufen...

bekomme folgende Meldung, wenn ich deine YouTube links aufrufen möchte:
"Firefox weiß nicht, wie diese Adresse geöffnet werden soll, da das Protokoll (rtsp) mit keinem Programm verknüpft ist."

Wunderschöne Schmuckstücke die du da designst! Der stilisierte Frauenkopf am Anfang gefällt mir besonders gut und auch die Nofretete von dir ist im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes ein richtiges Schmuckstück!
Interessant auch den Einblick in die Vorarbeiten in ZBrush, die du hier erklärst und zeigst.
Dass ZBrush für das Schmuckdesign genutzt werden kann bzw. wie eine entsprechende Idee umgesetzt werden kann, wusste ich bisher nicht.
Auf jeden Fall hast du in mir die Neugier geweckt und die Lust, selbst mal ein Stück zu design, die Umsetzung in ZBrush zu versuchen und dadurch ein ganz persönliches Schmuckstück zu erhalten.

Spannend, was da in Dingen 3D Druck bereits möglich ist und noch spannender, was die Zukunft in dieser Hinsicht noch so alles bringen wird!
Irgendwann wird ein 3D Drucker für Zuhause erschwinglich sein und die Leute werden sagen: "Stell dir vor, früher druckten die Menschen nur in 2D und dies auf Papier!" :-)
